For more than three decades, Isabelle Habegger has been developing a distinctive artistic language that bridges painting, sculpture, installation and performance. Her works arise from encounters with people, landscapes and cultures. They invite the viewer not only to look, but also to discover, to feel and to develop their own perspectives.

Every work begins with an observation. A change in light, a landscape, a conversation or a movement can become the starting point for a new piece.

In the studio, these impressions are gathered, distilled and translated into a distinct visual language. Sketches, photographs and materials serve not as templates, but as inspiration for an open-ended process in which intuition and experience play an equal part.

The focus is not on the representation of a moment, but on its atmosphere – that which remains when memory becomes colour, form or movement.

Isabelle Habegger’s artistic language arises from immediate emotion. Lines, colours and forms do not serve to depict an external reality, but rather to convey inner moods. Her works open up emotional pictorial spaces in which memory, symbolism and atmosphere merge to form a distinct visual language.

This approach is also evident in her use of colour. The vibrant red of her ‘China’ series symbolises happiness and vitality, whilst complementary shades of green, yellow accents and dynamic brushstrokes interweave landscapes and emotions. Movement remains a central design element – in the cloudscapes as well as in the seascapes.

Her monumental stainless-steel sculptures also follow this concept. Through bending, grinding and the deliberate juxtaposition of clear forms, she creates works that radiate a sense of lightness despite their materiality. Even the heavy sculptures interact with wind, light and space, becoming part of a living dialogue between the work, its surroundings and the viewer.

Through many conversations with Isabelle Habegger, I have come to realise that her works are never conceived on the drawing board. They grow out of encounters – with people, landscapes, cultures and moments that often seem fleeting and yet have a lasting impact. This openness shapes not only her artistic process, but also her attitude towards the world.

I am particularly fascinated by the fact that her works do not provide ready-made answers. They open up spaces for one’s own thoughts, memories and emotions. Every viewer brings their own personal story with them – and for me, that is precisely where the special quality of her art lies. She does not create distance, but connection.

Perhaps that is the most beautiful role of art: to connect people with one another. Across languages, cultures and borders. Isabelle Habegger achieves this with a lightness that is deeply moving – and with an openness that sparks curiosity and lingers long in the mind.
